There is widespread acceptance that human activities over the last 250 years have contributed to rising global temperatures, with 22% of man-made C02 emissions attributed to the transport sector. This consensus has been instrumental in UK government committing to legally binding green house gas emission reductions of 80% by 2050.
Demonised by some, the automobile is an enabler for economic prosperity and freedom. The production of 60 million vehicles annually provides the global population with the mobility they require to prosper, provides vital revenues for governments and represents a source of employment for millions of workers on a direct and indirect basis around the world.
Developed economies will fiercely protect their right for personal mobility, and emerging nations will embrace the automobile as an intrinsic part of their economic development. As a result annual global production is forecast to reach 80 million vehicles by 2020.
The automotive industry of tomorrow will be required to enable continued global economic prosperity, whilst simultaneously reducing the burden it places on the environmental balance sheet. Far from being mutually exclusive objectives, the industry is committed to and capable of achieving this sustainable future.
